Fiat Panda First Generation 30 652 cc in 1980

The 1980 Panda 30 combined Fiat's 652 cc air-cooled twin with a practical new front-wheel-drive body. This record covers the Italian-market launch and distinguishes contemporary test results from later Panda specifications.

The launch-year Panda 30

This record covers calendar-year 1980 and the Italian-market introduction of the Panda 30’s 652 cc air-cooled twin. It does not designate a separately documented model-year specification.

Fiat’s retrospective dates the Panda’s research programme to 1976 and its public presentation to the 1980 Geneva Motor Show. The original three-door car began the first-generation Panda story, which continued until 2003. That generation-wide lifespan must not be read as the production period of the original 652 cc engine. Italian launch specification

The Panda 30 used a 652 cc, Fiat 126-derived air-cooled twin, with its engine and driven wheels at the front. The contemporary launch account explains that the 30 and 45 names indicated power; the separate Panda 45 used a 903 cc four-cylinder engine.

Giugiaro’s angular design used flat glass and protective plastic bumpers. Tubular seats and a rearrangeable rear bench made the cabin adaptable. The Italian launch comparison distinguishes the 30’s plastic-coated seat material from the 45’s fabric upholstery.

Rear suspension used a rigid axle and leaf springs. Front disc brakes operated without servo assistance. These details describe the original launch configuration. Contemporary test, republished by ACI.

Contemporary reception

ACI’s archive reproduces a test from the February 1980 issue of l’Automobile. It reported 115 km/h maximum speed, 42.5 seconds for the standing kilometre and 18.5 km/l at 90 km/h for the smaller-engined Panda. These are period test reports, not modern certification figures.

The reviewers praised controllable handling and braking, while noting engine noise and occasionally imprecise gear engagement. Their assessment presented the 30 as practical basic transport, with the 45 offering livelier performance. Read the republished test.

Production context and historical significance

The launch belongs to Fiat’s Italian manufacturing history. Fiat’s factory history identifies Termini Imerese, Sicily, as a Panda production site. That account covers the model’s factory history collectively; it does not establish a 1980 Panda 30 production total or assign every 652 cc car to that plant. Fiat’s Termini Imerese history.

The 1980 car records the starting point of a much longer programme. Fiat dates the introduction of four-wheel drive to 1983 and the major first-generation revision to 1986, when FIRE engines replaced the original 652 cc and 903 cc units. Those later developments belong to separate specifications. Historically, the launch-year 30 illustrates the Panda’s original emphasis on accessible, adaptable everyday transport.
