Alfa Romeo Giulia 105/115 1600 TI
The original Giulia saloon variant combined four-door practicality with a 1,570 cc twin-cam engine and five-speed gearbox. Introduced in 1962, it established the foundation of Alfa Romeo’s Giulia saloon family.
The original Giulia saloon
The Giulia 1600 TI was the original four-door variant of the Giulia 105/115 saloon generation. Alfa Romeo presented it at Monza on 27 June 1962 under the name Giulia TI. The initials meant Turismo Internazionale. Here, 1600 distinguishes the engine class; it does not denote a separate generation. The later 1300 TI and competition-oriented TI Super are separate variants.
Development included camouflaged prototypes tested in the late 1950s. The production car brought the Giulia name into everyday saloon motoring during Alfa Romeo’s industrial expansion. Alfa Romeo’s anniversary account documents both the prototype programme and launch.
Production and chronology
Production began at Portello in Milan and subsequently moved to Arese, according to Stellantis Heritage. This record does not assign an exact factory-transfer date.
The Giulia variant chronology gives 1962–1967 for the 1600 TI. These are production years, not a universal market-specific model-year designation. That account dates the availability of a floor gear lever with separate front seats to May 1964, with a right-hand-drive version appearing around the same time. It dates standard floor change and revised round instruments to February 1966.
The later 1600 S occupied the lower-priced 1.6-litre position. Retrospective accounts differ over the timing of that succession, so no exact replacement date is asserted here.
Body and accommodation
The TI’s upright four-door body combined a roomy passenger compartment and luggage boot with a distinctive truncated rear. Four round headlamps framed Alfa Romeo’s central grille. Its angular appearance concealed deliberate attention to aerodynamic shape.
Early cars paired front and rear bench seats with a steering-column gear lever, allowing accommodation for six. These details belong to the original configuration rather than every TI built. The saloon’s styling and packaging are described in Alfa Romeo’s fiftieth-anniversary history. Coupés and open Giulia derivatives are outside this variant record.
Engine, transmission and brakes
The 1600 TI used a 1,570 cc four-cylinder twin-cam engine with a single twin-choke downdraught carburettor and a five-speed manual gearbox. Early cars had drum brakes; disc brakes followed during the range’s development. Launch specification should therefore not be inferred from a later disc-braked example. Stellantis Heritage describes the original engine, seating and braking arrangement.
The FIA’s Giulia 1600 TI entry independently records four cylinders, 1,570 cc and rear-wheel drive under homologation 5050. Its January 1966 homologation date and January 1976 expiry describe competition eligibility, not the start and end of production.
Published retrospective power figures differ. No single output or performance figure is applied here to all years and markets.
Place in the Giulia family
The TI Super, introduced in 1963, developed the sporting side of the saloon with greater power and reduced weight. The Super, introduced in 1965, offered a more developed road-car specification and revised accommodation. Both are siblings of the 1600 TI, rather than alternative names for it. Alfa Romeo’s anniversary history distinguishes these developments.
The original TI matters as the starting point of this saloon family: a practical car with engineering that helped establish the Giulia’s sporting reputation. Its association with Italian public service also became part of its identity; Alfa Romeo selected a Carabinieri-liveried standard TI to represent the production model at its 2012 anniversary exhibition.
